LOST OWNERS

“I’m walking around, nothing looks familiar. Different noises are coming at me from all directions. Someone I’ve never seen before puts a leash on me. They seem nice, but I don’t understand why they are putting me in this car I’ve never seen before. What’s this place they have taken me too? Looks like the country, but listen to all those dogs barking.

I’m a little scared now.

There’s food and water, a safe place to sleep. These new people are talking very nice to me. But, why won’t anyone call me by my name?

Hello?
I have a name, where's my family?
They know my name. Maybe they’re lost.”

Imagine those feelings; we at Atherton Kennels and Shelter often wonder if that’s how the animals that come to our shelter feel. These are animals that have lost their owners. To see a list and brief description of the animals the shelter has received and that are still on hold waiting to be reclaimed by their owners. You can visit our forum. Atherton Kennels and Shelter receives animals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the local law enforcement officials of Ontario, Nyssa, Vale, Oregon and Payette, Idaho. Occasionally, we receive Malheur County dogs from the Oregon State Police; however, lost animals from the county and the entire Treasure Valley usually come to the shelter by way of caring individuals. They find them and choose to bring them to a safe environment until hopefully, the owners reclaim them.

If you have found or believe you have found your lost pet

  • Please make a trip to the shelter and verify that it is your animal.
  • If your pet was brought in by law enforcement, you will need to get a release form, during regular business hours, from that agency before we can release your animal to you.
  • A release form will generally involve, proof of vaccinations, spaying, neutering and licensing. Other fines may also be charged for having a dog at large. We suggest you contact the appropriate agency to find out what their requirements are.
  • Once you have the release form, you will be able to reclaim your pet.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

There are a couple of very important ways to help insure the safe return of your dog if he loses you. Always have your dog securely wearing a current dog license. For an added protection, check with your vet about having a micro-chip implanted just under the skin. We currently have an Avid Chip reader and have been told by the Avid Company that it will also read the Home Again and Life Chip. All stray dogs that come to the shelter are scanned upon arriving. This is possible due to a generous donation of an Avid Chip Reader, by the late Dr. Sherman. For more information talk to your vet. Remember, and please be aware, an unlicensed animal in Oregon only has to be held for 72 hrs. A licensed animal is 5 days. Atherton Kennels tries to allow 7 days for an owner to reclaim their adult pet. When that time period ends these animals are put up for adoption and the shelter attempts to place them with new families.

Keeping in Constant Contact with the shelter is the Responsibility of the Owner.

Remember, How would you feel if no one knew your name?
